On 13 September 2026, Italian gastronomy in Mauritius took centre stage at Voila Bagatelle during “A Taste of Italy: Italiano in cucina”, an event bringing together Italian language, culture and culinary traditions for professionals from the restaurant and hospitality industry.
Organised by the Italian Cultural Institute of Pretoria, under the patronage of the Consulate of Italy in Mauritius and with the support of Websun Academy, the initiative offered participants an opportunity to explore Italy through both language and food.
As a partner of the event, L’Artigiano contributed to the gastronomic experience, taking participants on a journey through the regional products, traditions and savoir-faire that shape Italian cuisine.
Bringing Italian language and culinary culture together
Designed for hospitality professionals, A Taste of Italy: Italiano in cucina explored the Italian language within a practical restaurant environment.
Participants discovered vocabulary used in hospitality, menu terminology and practical situations encountered in restaurants, connecting language learning with a deeper understanding of Italian culture.
The experience then moved from language to taste, with a gastronomic journey showcasing the diversity of Italy’s regional culinary traditions.
A culinary journey through the regions of Italy
Italy’s gastronomy is deeply connected to its regions, with ingredients, recipes and traditions reflecting the identity of each territory.
The journey began in Puglia, with two olive oils from Galantino accompanied by Bella di Cerignola and Peranzana olives. Participants also discovered Taggiasca olives, a speciality associated with Liguria.
Next came Campania, represented by mozzarella di bufala campana and traditional bruschetta.
From there, the experience moved to Emilia-Romagna, with focaccia filled with mortadella di Bologna con pistacchio, stracciatella and pistachio pesto.
For the main course, Veneto was represented by bigoli served with San Marzano DOP tomato and 24-month Parmigiano Reggiano.
The journey ended on a sweet note with Sicilian cannoli topped with pistachio granella, alongside baba with Chantilly cream and strawberries. Participants were also introduced to the new Astoria Prosecco.
Italian gastronomy: products with a story to tell
Beyond discovering new flavours, the event highlighted the connection between Italian products and the territories, traditions and craftsmanship behind them.
“Italian gastronomy tells a story shaped by territories, traditions and savoir-faire passed down from generation to generation. Through Taste of Italy, we wanted to contribute to this transmission by giving hospitality professionals the opportunity to discover the diversity of Italian products while gaining a deeper understanding of what makes them authentic,” says Daniela Quaranta, CEO of L’Artigiano.
The event welcomed chefs and representatives from several leading hospitality groups in Mauritius, including LUX*, Constance, Beachcomber, Marriott, Club Med and Sunlife, as well as representatives from the Mauritius Institute of Polytechnic.
Connecting Italian producers with hospitality professionals in Mauritius
For L’Artigiano, bringing Italian gastronomy to Mauritius goes beyond making Italian products available locally. It also means sharing the origins, characteristics and culinary traditions associated with them.
Understanding where an ingredient comes from, how it is produced and how it is traditionally used gives hospitality professionals another dimension to the products they work with — knowledge that can then be shared with their teams and guests.
“Our role is also to create bridges between Italian producers and the professionals who bring gastronomy to life in Mauritius. When a chef discovers the story of a product, its terroir and the way it is traditionally used, they can in turn pass that story on to their teams and customers. This is the chain of transmission we want to encourage and develop,” explains Daniela Quaranta.
Sharing Italian gastronomy in Mauritius
The event was held under the patronage of the Consulate of Italy in Mauritius, represented by the Consul of Italy, Stefano Zinno, who also participated in the presentation of certificates to attendees.
Through A Taste of Italy: Italiano in cucina, language, food and culture came together in one experience, creating a space for discovery and exchange between Italy and Mauritius.
For L’Artigiano, the event reflected a wider commitment to sharing the richness of Italian gastronomy in Mauritius — not only through authentic products, but through the territories, traditions and savoir-faire that give them their identity.
